Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the beginning, Toto made products to meet the growing demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. The company began expanding its operations overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products of other manufacturers in order to enhance its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the company's market share in the world.

In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to supply chain management, and it used the same approach in its sales strategy. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock outfit. The band began as four members and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its own set of issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release a hit single or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto, they did with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distorted AOR that could seem like a complete blunder, but is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before.
