How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. 5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your car. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points.
