Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
