How to Replace an Audi Key Fob Not Working G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are audi key fob not working in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero Ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The replacement audi car key will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi q5 key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points.
