Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
