Brakes

A good single pushchair should come with two brake systems. The hand brake is typically an incredibly small lever-like device on the chassis. You can turn it down to stop the pushchair and then push it up to continue. This is particularly useful in urban areas where you may have to stop quickly, or on pavements at malls where pedestrians could be present. The front wheel brake is present on high-end pushchairs, such as the phil&teds Dash or Bugaboo Cameleon 3. It is activated in the same manner as a bicycle's brake. This is particularly helpful when you're running, or going over rough terrain, as it stops the pushchair instantly and keep your child safe.

Seat unit/carrycot

A pushchair single is a type of baby travel device for older infants (6 months +) who are just beginning to sit up and view the world. These can often be transformed into a pram. Prams typically include more sophisticated features and are designed for newborns through to toddlers, with extra padding to ensure your child's comfort.

Many pushchairs can be used with car seats and allow you to make a travel bundle that lets you transfer infants who are sleeping in your car to the pushchair. Some come with an infant carrycot, which is ideal for newborns, while others have a seat unit which you can use when your baby is ready to move from the carrycot.

Most 'from-birth' pushchairs allow you to select the facing direction of the seat unit or carrycot. You can choose to face the parent in order to bond with your baby, or the world to allow them to explore the world. Some pushchairs permit you to connect an additional carrycot, infant carrier or ride-on board.

A high-quality pushchair should be able to easily traverse various terrains, such as grass, pavements, and rough surfaces. A sturdy and durable chassis built to last is important and so is the choice of tyres. Some tyres are pneumatic that require air to be pumped in at intervals, while other tyres are made from an alternative material such as EVA or PU, which can provide a more comfortable and consistent ride.

It's worth investing in a pushchair that is easy to keep clean and maintained. You can get rid of spills and crumbs with a baby-wipe, but if you want to remove more stubborn marks, use the hot air of the hair dryer for 1 to 2 minutes.
