WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. A random substat is also increased with each upgrade.

The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with higher variance due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that are used to upgrade weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item upgrading's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item. For example, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade items costs 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. After an Item Level Upgrade has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon as well as the chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded, and can be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a certain level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will be less expensive, even in the event that they belong to an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain achievement milestones.

Crests

Players have a number of choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item upgrader mod level upgrades. Crests are an important part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

First, you should know that crests are only available for equipment that is of a particular rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complex may require as many as 20 crests depending on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. When a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one purpose therefore it's essential to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan on making. This is especially true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are full of high-quality gear.
