Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature.
