Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot for the item and the current item upgrader mod level. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players finish certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. After a player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This is true even if the items are from an entirely different set of equipment.

The discount is available to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available after certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players have a number of choices when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special, and are used during specific Item level upgrade level upgrades. Crests are an integral element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be spent on gear of a specific rank, and each rank has its own requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade can require up to 20 crests, contingent on the type or equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through completing content at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or completing dungeons and raids in all difficulties to get lower-tier gear or Mythicbosses of raids or dungeons with a heroic difficulty to obtain endgame gear. These crests can be exchanged with an item upgrader, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and paths.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This is to allow players to get their equipment to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they are only used for one purpose. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
