Ignition Cylinder Lock Repair

The ignition lock in the cylinder is responsible for allowing the key to turn and start the car. It works through springs and chambers that could be damaged by environmental conditions like low or high temperatures.

If your ignition switch, key or both will not turn, it could indicate that the lock's cylinder has to be replaced. This is a task best left to an auto locksmith professional.

Remove the covers for the steering column.

Ignition lock cylinders are mechanical parts that allow a key to be placed into the ignition switch and then turned in order to start the car. They can fail or wear out in various ways, including keys being placed too hard or not in the proper position. They can also fail due to corrosion, and other reasons. It's time to replace your ignition cylinder if it's not functioning. It's a simple task however, you'll need to remove the cover of the steering column and airbag cover. This is a risky process and could be difficult. It may also require special tools to the replacement cylinder.

The ignition cylinder is in the middle of the column where the steering wheel is attached. It has two screws at the bottom and a clip on the side to hold it to the column. It is important to remove these before you begin working on the cylinder to ensure that it doesn't fall off and get lost.

Once the screws are removed, you can pull the plastic retainers out of the bottom of the cover. There's a metal retainer that clips onto the top of the cover to keep it in position. It is possible to pull off the cover to take out the tabs that are lower.

You can break them off by removing the screw that holds them and bending the tab outward. If the tab has been damaged completely it can be replaced by using a piece of perforated strapping made of metal that is available at many hardware shops. You'll also need some U-clips for the new bottom "tab," and these can be bought from any auto parts store.

After removing the plastic tabs and pulling back the airbag cover, it is now possible to reach the ignition cylinder. You can unlock the ignition lock with the 1/16-inch Allen wrench and pull the retaining bolt of the cylinder. Then, you can pull the cylinder away. It may be necessary to replace it with a specially designed cylinder to protect against theft.

Take off the Ignition Cylinder

While many of the latest vehicles have transitioned to push-to-start systems, there's many cars in the market that require an ignition lock cylinder. This cylindrical, mechanical component is contained within the electrically powered device known as the ignition switch, which locks the ignition and "reads" anti-theft codes inside the car key to allow it to start.

It could be time to call an auto locksmith if your car ignition key replacement has signs of a damaged lock cylinder. A faulty ignition lock cylinder can lead to several problems including a lack in power to the engine, and difficulty in inserting or taking out keys. Worn keys can damage wafer tumblers, which let the cylinder to turn. This can cause a jam and prevents the vehicle from getting started.

Depending on the brand and model of your car the ignition cover could be attached using a clip or screw. Utilizing a screwdriver to loosen the screw, then remove the cover to reveal the cylinder that locks the ignition. It's usually a metal cylinder that's about the size of one quarter.

To take the cylinder off, you'll need to drill out the pin that holds it in place. Make use of a drill bit that is slightly larger than the key slot, and drill through the cylinder until it is broken. You can then remove the cylinder and then replace it.

The exact process for removing the ignition cylinder is different for each manufacturer, so you'll need to read your service manual to determine what steps are required. After the cylinder is removed, you can install the new ignition switch.

Before you can do that you'll have to replace the covers for the steering column. Two screws are needed to secure the lock assembly in place. After you've done that, installing your new ignition cylinder shouldn't prove to be too difficult.

Take out the Ignition Switch

The ignition switch and cylinder are separate parts of the electrical system in your car. Although they appear like they are, they are able to be repaired or replaced independently of one other. The switch is the part that provides power to the vehicle while the cylinder is the mechanical tumbler that your key is able to slide into. Generally, you can discern that the cylinder for ignition is failing by its inability to turn your key.

If the cylinder fails, the pins in the tumbler can wear out, making it difficult or impossible to insert or pull your key. If you notice that your key is worn and won't turn it, the best choice is to have the wafers inside of it replaced or smoothed by a professional locksmith.

Depending on your vehicle's make it could have a screw or bolt that is used to secure the switch, and removing this will expose the cylinder that controls the ignition. It is essential to check the service manual of your vehicle prior to making the attempt at home since it can be hazardous and cause damage to the steering column as well as the plastic covers. The switch is also bundled with the wiring for airbags. If you mess with it, it could cause serious injury.

To remove the ignition cylinder, you'll need to use a drill to loosen it. You can also use pliers to disengage it from the assembly however, this is typically more difficult than using the screwdriver. Once the ignition cylinder is loose it is possible to replace it with a brand new one from a local auto store.

You'll require all the wires connected to the electrical connection on the steering column to test its proper operation. It's generally easier to disconnect the battery, then remove the ignition key and then start the car. You can reconnect the battery after the ignition has worked. If the car still doesn't start, you'll need to have the immobilizer reset. This can be done by a dealer or an automotive service technician. This can be a complex procedure, so it's best left to a certified professional.

Install the Ignition Cylinder

The ignition switch on your car sends an indication to the engine that it's time for it to begin. The key inserts into a lock cylinder to initiate this process, however the pins and wafers inside the cylinder may wear out over time. It could be difficult or impossible to start your vehicle when the cylinder gets stuck.

If your key won't turn on the ignition, it is likely that it's time to get replaced. A professional locksmith can replace the cylinder with a new one, meaning that your new key will work with your old ignition switch, and will be able to trigger the engine startup signal.

To take out the old lock cylinder simply push it in to the release pin at the bottom of the assembly, and remove the cylinder from its housing. If the cylinder won't be able to slide out, try pressing the release pin or pressing a small anti rotation button on the front of the cylinder. You may also try pushing in on the cylinder using your key while rotating it to the ACC or accessory position to try and get it out.

Once you've removed the old cylinder, put in the new one and switch on the vehicle to check whether it's working. If so, you can connect the trim pieces that you removed to get to the cylinder. Then, you can go through the relearning process to connect the new keys.

Although the lock for the ignition cylinder isn't as integral to the functionality of your car as it used to be but there are still scenarios where you'll require replacement. Contact a professional like an locksmith or dealer in the automotive industry to ensure that the task is done without causing damage to the steering column's or other parts of your vehicle. It is also essential to ensure that the new ignition cylinder is correctly encoded so that your vehicle can recognize it as an authentic key. In most instances, this will require a dealership or other professional to perform the relearning.
